Are you fed up with the tinny speakers inside your iPod or iPhone? Well, that is not surprising really since the speakers inside the iPhone were designed primarily for voice and not for music. Also, let’s face it: there is hardly any space inside the iPhone or iPod to allow for a decent speaker to be incorporated. If you want to get better sound then the only option is for you to use an external speaker.
When you hook up a speaker to your iPhone, you will need to get a power amplifier. Without the amplifier the speakers would damage the audio output of your iPhone. The speaker inside the iPhone is tiny and won’t overload the iPhone amplifier. However, if you want some more wattage then you really need to get a decent audio amp. Alternatively you can also get a pair of active speaker. Active speakers can directly plug into your iPhone since they have their own internal audio amp. This eliminates a lot of speaker cable clutter.
If you want even less clutter then why not get one of the most-recent iPhone speaker docks? These docks have even less cable clutter since you won’t even need to connect your iPhone to the speakers with a cable anymore. Instead, these speaker docks have a cradle into which you plug in the iPhone. The music is streamed via the docking connector of the dock. Note though that there are two types of docking connectors. The latest lightning connectors differ a great deal from the previous 30-pin connector. When getting an iPhone dock, be sure that the cradle has the same docking connector as your iPhone. Otherwise you will need to get a suitable adapter.
There are also some wireless iPhone docks on the market. These docks have the clear advantage of allowing better flexibility in terms of where you put the speakers. Having more distance between the two speakers will give better stereo separation.
